Omega Alpha Healthy Horse Award: Quality All the Way

Wellington, FL ( December 21, 2015) — The Omega Alpha Healthy Horse Award is presented by Omega Alpha Pharmaceuticals of Canada to horses whose good health shines from the inside out. The latest Healthy Horse Award was presented during the 2015 Holiday Circuit hosted by Equestrian Sports Productions (ESP) in Wellington, Florida. The 2015 Holiday Circuit winner was Quality, who received the award after being piloted by Jimmy Torano in the $10,000 Open Stakes Class at the ESP Holiday Festival I. Omega Alpha, a sponsor of the Holiday Circuit, was pleased to recognize the talented duo for Quality’s outstanding physical condition and appearance.

Quality is ridden and trained by Torano for owner Deborah Perkins. “This was our very first class together,” Torano explained after the Open Stakes. “Quality just came over from Holland a little over a month ago. We've been testing the waters and trying to acclimate him. When he first arrived, he didn’t look quite as good as he does now, so it's exciting to be picked for this award,” said Torano of the newly-imported horse. “In the weeks to come he’s going to be jumping some big classes.”

Torano and Quality received a commemorative Omega Alpha Healthy Horse Award ribbon, a prize basket full of Omega Alpha health products, an embroidered hat, and a fly scrim. “I've heard of Omega Alpha products—they’re very popular,” Torano commented. “We couldn't have earned this without good help, good grooms, and good care. These horses are better taken care of than we are, and that's what it's all about,” he smiled.

Torano has recently moved to a new facility near the show grounds in Wellington, and plans to debut Quality in the Grand Prix arena by Week 2 of the 2016 Winter Equestrian Festival in Wellington. “We've set our sights on the million dollar class,” he said, sounding like a horseman who knows that quality is as quality does.

Omega Alpha will continue to recognize quality as the 2016 season opens in Wellington by presenting six Omega Alpha Healthy Horse Awards during the Winter Equestrian Festival and six awards during the Global Dressage Festival.

For over twenty years, Omega Alpha has been researching and perfecting its safe, botanical equine health products. The Canadian-based company's award-winning products include supplements for respiratory, digestive, joint, hormonal, and immune health as well as products for detoxification, muscle rehabilitation, endurance, and performance. Highly invested in the overall health and well being of the equine community, Omega Alpha is proud to support equestrians at the WEF and GDF 2016 series.

Daryl Portela and Winner in their Grand Champion Amateur-Owner Hunter 3’3″ presentation with ringmaster John Franzreb, groom Gerardo Briseno, and Betty Oare
An amazing and exceptional 2015 Washington International Horse Show for Daryl Portela and Winner!!
  • Winner of all three over fences classes,
  • High Point Stakes Winner (score of 88),
  • Champion with 34 points in the Amateur Owner 3'3" 35+ Division,
  • Grand Champion Amateur Owners 3'3",
  • Essex Leading Amateur Owner rider of all the A/O divisions including the 3'6" divisions chosen by the judges.

Daryl has now been Grand Champion 3 out of the last 4 years on Winner at the Washington International Horse Show!! And the only reason it wasn't 4 out of 4 is Jimmy was the judge one of the years and Daryl couldn't show as a result!

Here is an excerpt from Jennifer Wood's final wrap-up of the WIHS:

At the conclusion of the afternoon, Isalou Inc.’s Winner was named Grand Amateur-Owner Hunter 3’3” Champion, sponsored by Mr. & Mrs. Earnest M. Oare. Winner’s rider, Daryl Portela, was named the Leading Amateur-Owner Hunter Rider for the 3’3” division overall.

The pair topped the Amateur-Owner Hunter 3’3” Over 35 division with three wins over fences and a third place finish under saddle. Portela also accepted the award for Best Amateur-Owner Hunter 3’3” Stake Round with a high score of 88 and was awarded the EQUUS Foundation Best Amateur Performance of the Day. Reserve honors went to Glen Senk and Fashion Farm’s Loyalty, with two second-place ribbons over fences, as well as a second place finish under saddle.

Portela has owned Winner, a 12-year-old Warmblood gelding (by Haarlem), for four years. The pair competes with the help of trainer Jimmy Torano and has consistently swept ribbons around the country since their partnership began. Portela also earned the same division championship, grand championship and leading rider titles in 2012 and 2013 with Winner. Those two years, the duo won all four division classes. She took last year off from WIHS while Torano judged the competition.

“It is a little emotional. It feels really good,” Portela said of her overall accomplishment. “I wanted to come back and do it again after my year off. Winner was great yesterday and won the first class, then he was third in the hack and won both classes today, so it is very exciting. He loves this horse show. I like this horse show. It is exciting to be in the city.”

Portela said that she does about 15 horse shows a year, and tries to keep Winner’s schedule focused on the most important events. The horse also maintains a light work schedule at home.

“I don’t show him a lot. I never jump him at home. I hack him,” she noted. “He has been pretty consistent. I know him really well now and I trust him. I try to just go in and have fun, but I am very competitive. He has just been an awesome horse.”

Portela and Winner travel to Kentucky to compete next week and then make the trip to Wellington, FL, for the winter, where Winner will enjoy living at Torano’s brand new farm.

A partnership of a life time. And huge thanks to Jimmy Torano's training and to Gerardo Briseno who was recognized in the ring as the Groom for Winner!! Slide show below has winning photos from Washington.

Danielle Torano - At the Top at Capital Challenge with Herault and Callas 2

Picture
From the Capital Challenge Daily Update - Interview with Danielle Torano:

In the $10,000 North American Junior/Amateur-Owner Challenge Cup Final Round. Nine riders advanced to the jump-off, It was a race to the finish to see who could be fastest. Danielle Torano of Wellington, FL, and Herault sped to the finish stopping the jump-off timers in 36.902 seconds for the win. Cloe Hymowitz of Bridgehampton, NY, last year’s winner of the Ariat Cup and Romance De Kerliven finished in second with a time of 37.803 seconds while Danielle piloted her second mount into the top three as Callas 2 was just a few milliseconds slower than Hymowitz with a time of 37.895 seconds for third.

Danielle said of her rides, “I’m soaking wet and I absolutely hate riding in the rain, but it was completely worth it and paid off,” she laughed. In terms of her mental preparation for riding two very different horses so close together in the order, Torano detailed the uniqueness of each ride, “Herault is a full-brother to a horse that I used to have,Vancouver, who I did in the really big grand prix classes and he rides very similarly so I’m comfortable with him. It’s like putting on an old glove. Callas 2 is a little bit more difficult for me though because she’s so careful. In my mind I get a little ahead of myself and feel like I have to make sure we get there perfectly every time because she is so scopey and careful.”
